Hay Festival Foundation and an auction.

Last year at Hay Festival, live on stage, I painted an otter in river water and sumi ink. Robert Macfarlane had hand written the spell for otter on the paper, against gilded capital letters.

You can watch last year’s event on Hayplayer, or listen. It has beautiful music by Kerry Andrew at the start and close of the event, Wren and Bluebell, both magical pieces.

It’s a curiously witchy thing to do, to incant an otter fo rink and water onto paper. Thick, heavy, watercolour paper, with a beautiful tooth to snag the brush.

Now the work I made is framed in a deep heavy, handmade frame, ( made by John at Robel on the Quay in Haverfordwest– he dresses my work so beautifully, framed all The Lost Words show) and the piece is offered for sale to raise money for the Hay Foundation. You can read more about the work of the Foundation here.

The reserve on the piece has been met, and at last look the piece was at £1 800

I love the way Rob’s handwriting sits with my images. The piece is signed by both of us and I have put Hay Festival 2018 on also.

To bid on the piece, go to the auction site. There are other wonderful pieces to buy too, including signed book. The artist is not included in the bid, only the farmed otter!

About Jackie

I am an artist and writer. I live in a small house by the sea in Wales where I write, paint, walk and watch and dream of bears and whales. I love to read, have a wish for wings and prefer the company of animals to that of humans, though at times I can be quite friendly. I am learning how to work with wood engraving tools and hoping to show that you can teach an old dog new tricks.
