Where I am, and will be.

About Jackie

I am an artist and writer. I live in a small house by the sea in Wales where I write, paint, walk and watch and dream of bears and whales. I love to read, have a wish for wings and prefer the company of animals to that of humans, though at times I can be quite friendly. I am learning how to work with wood engraving tools and hoping to show that you can teach an old dog new tricks.

I still don’t do/won’t do Twitter ( defiant bear). So – I saw Mr. Mac. musing about images representing things, maybe before there were words, as such, for those things – here’s a good quote………….

“Symbols are the natural speech of the soul, a language older and more universal than words.”
    Edmund Spenser (1552-99)

And, as more and more markings are found, from the Neolithic, and farther back than the Neolithic, too, it looks more and more as though, yes, symbols, images, were used to represent/illuminate/explain concepts.
And – we still do it today – a ‘Lady’ on the door of a ladies loo. Though, the ‘Man’ could be a lady in trousers, these days!
There’s a book called ‘The Story of Writing’ by Andrew Robinson.
And, I have to mention – ancient carved stone balls and other objects.
Hmmmmmmm. There is a lot to think about, and find out about, around this.

Loved your talk at Waterstones in Truro. Meant to ask if you’d considered Truro museum for an exhibition. It’s a lovely space in the galleries in there.

I would love the exhibition to go to Truro Museum, but they will need to contact Compton Verney for details. It was great to get such a wonderful turnout at the event.
