Starting with white paper and pale drawn lines

Characters begin to appear

and colours wash around shapes and figures

drawing people out.

As the hours go by the people begin to dance from the page

and layer upon layer as the hours go by

builds a world on the paper.

 

Over time the details build and sometimes there is little difference

between one painting and the next.

Days go by and the painting has to be pulled together with darker washes in the sky to make the lanterns shine,

to make the swan follow the peacock

until all is almost finished
