Beauty: The Winner in ‘A Contest of Beauty’.
When you search for beauty in the world you will always be rewarded. When you step outside the hustle and bustle of life to just catch that elusive moment, a word, the flick of a feather of beauty, or stand in the garden at night and watch the moon-path silvering clouds. Beauty.
Moments of beauty from yesterday for me were:
- The light on the beach during a morning walk, reflecting.
- A white feather trapped by water on the sand.
- The faces of friends.
- The moon.
- Winterbone branches of hawthorn trees rocking to the wind, green with lichen and still clinging to red berries.
- A woodpecker on the small tree outside the kitchen window.
- An idea.
Thank you everyone who entered the Contest of Beauty. I am sorry I have not had more time to put links to everyone’s entry. Hopefully it will be a blog post that will continue to build.
Hard as it was to choose a winner I have and that is The Mermaid in the Attic’s entry for many reasons.
- Because she took a theme and stepped outside of a story. I love the story of Beauty and the Beast, am always disappointed with how he changes, but she imagined Beauty looking back on her life and this is a place I have not been before and now it fascinated me, so for that, thank you.
- Because the Beauty she has painted is not some creature from a magazine, but a real face of a real woman with all the lines of living etched onto her face, so for that, thank you.
- For the song that goes with the piece, recorded in 15 minutes in a cramped space with the accompanyment of a dog bark while ‘Beloved’ took child to school, and that in itself is beautiful but so it the hastily recorded sound. It is real, like Beauty.

It was hard to choose, and it is not that Christina’s painting is ‘more beautiful’ than any of the others that I was sent, but there is something about the whole concept and execution of the idea that seeds another story in the soul. That is what I love. So, the Moongazing Hare will be heading to live in Western Australia.
Beauty for me so far today has been:
- Early morning light on twisted tree tops.
- Quiet talking with Robin about a project that intrigues.
I will spend the day looking for more.
I think she is a worthy winner, her combination of music and pictures is indeed beautiful.

I am so pleased… from the first I absolutely loved Christina’s poem, painting and song and the whole concept she has given life…
The contest of beauty has been a wonderful idea, an eye and soul opening reminder to look, feel and aborb… and there’s been some windows opened to some lovely places along the way!
