Commuting to work

Posted on July 17, 2024

Early morning was mist and spiderwebs. I decided it was time to take a long commute to work, along ancestral pathways, and the dwellings of ghost and the dead. Come with me?

There were flowers, so many. And far away, over the ancient burial chamber, a wild soul soared in the mist softened sky.

So many small lives along the way.

Pale soul rose in the sky, with angry gull in close pursuit.

We rested a while by the burial chamber, trying to speak with the souls of the dead, and the language of choughs was all around and raven.

Wild honeysuckle threaded beneath bracken, and the heather so thick a cloak on the hillside you could taste the very scent of it, mingled with the scent of the salt sea breeze like silk on the skin.

The low thorn tree is so beautiful, so old. Thick with leaves and wind tangled it grows in the harshest of places.

And harebells! Delicate and threaded along the path like gifts.

Imagine the taste of the air, here. So rich. The land belongs to all the small lives who dwell here. Bird, insect, plant, snake, lizard, weasel, all.

Sea mirrors sky, holds more light than the land. Pewter. Calm. Beautiful.

On the coastal edge the wild ponies seek the cool of the sea’s breeze.

At Maes Y Mynydd the dead and the living inhabit the old stone walls in a perfect harmony.

Home now, time to work, back to the bird book as thoughts change, plans change.

    Dear Jackie
I met you many years ago at Art in Action at Waterperry House and fell in love with your paintings and your dreams. I have just visited your exhibition at Rheged ( I now live in the Lakes) and was again blown away by your incredible talent. Your collaboration with Robert MacFarlane is beyond amazing. I just want to thank you for sharing your talents and your philosophy on life. In this busy and troubled world we all need to find space and to reconnect with nature. Let us hope we can hold on to the words and the spells and the magic of life that is all around us. Thank you again.

I saw Maes Y Mynydd on one of the photo tags, but on Google Maps this came up as inland. What area is this?

Your dog looks like s/he loves your commute too.
