If you have a moment, if you are feeling generous, then stop what you are doing and look at this. We should always be judged by how we receive strangers into our homes, and what better time to be reminded of this than at Christmas. So, if you can, go to the Amazon Wish List page for Women for Refugee Women and send them a gift. They do not ask for much, just a place of safety. Language will give them power.
As I read this (I’ve scuttled in to my back room to avoid the pontificating politicians on the tv news!) we’re hearing that more survivors of a storm-wrecked boat, full of refugees, have been found…
Those who have never been through such trauma cannot, surely, just sit back and say”so what?”
Whether abused women, displaced citizens, war-wounded…surely we must help?

Indeed. Many times I have thought how fortunate my accident of birth was and how different my life could have been. I have been a life long supporter of Amnesty International and am increasingly disappointed by politicians who seem to live their lives on sound bites rather than through action, unless it is in support of industry, banks or trade.
Thanks so much for flagging up our request for books for refugee women. These women have all fled persecution and are really struggling in their daily lives, but are still so keen to learn and discover. That’s ok. Seems such a small thing to do. Can I ask, why The Poisonwood Bible? And would some picture books be useful to you? Sometimes they can be very good for teaching English, or even just for pleasure.
